From Michael Cricton's "Timeline": "She tried to place that rumbling sound when a teenage boy burst around the corner, racing toward her. the boy was wearing black hose, a bright green quilted jacket and a black cap. He was red-faced with exertion; he'd clearly been running for some time. he seemed startled to find her walking on the path. As he came near her, he yelled, 'Hide woman! For the sake of God! Hide!' "
In an instant, the author has a character painted with words. He's young, not dressed in modern clothing, and has been running scared. I can picture in my mind a teenager with eyes wide open and the look of true fear on his face.
As you did yesterday, quote your author's work where he or she described a character. It can be from any place in the book that you have read already. DON'T FORGET: write about what you think about the description. Did you get any extra meaning from it? This is character development, not plot.
Enjoy!

Okay, had to add one more from the book, 'Timeline', by Michael Crichton.
The driver of a car just hit a guy in the road. "As the dust cleared, he saw the man lying at the side of the road, trying to raise himself up on his elbow. The guy was shaky, about seventy, balding and bearded. His skin was pale; he didn't look Navajo. His brown clothes were fashioned into long robes. Maybe he's a priest, Baker thought."
The setting is a dusty, desert road. The man doesn't look Navajo, (American Indian.) So, he's out of place. His clothing is out of place as well. This character presents a mystery because he's an old out of place guy in the middle of the desert...in the middle of the road. It made me want to read on.
What did you find today that made you want to read on? Mr M
The boy named Marty loves dogs he works for money to buy Judd's dog.Judd is not nice to his dogs he shot one of his dogs for not lisining to him.Marty keep him a secrat from him because he does not want him to kill the dog.He buys his dog from him.So Shiloh is his dog.
"And suddenly, according to my imagination, I'd been on my feet, screaming,'Why didn't you leave us alone? Why did you have to drag us in? You're scum, filth. I hate you. Go away. You deserve everything, everthing, you understand? Everything that you get. IT'S NOT MY FAULT.'"
You can tell that she really hates Jack(dad's friend).
She had the same nightmare over and over again. This is what she says right after.
"It was so real I was trembling.None of it happened of course. But for hours Cindy gazed at the TV, I watched this movie in my head, running it over and over, changing the dialogue each time, trying to find words I could say to him that would be more powerful, more affective."
I don't really know if this "nightmare" really happened or not. She either already told him or is thinking about it.
She says she needs words more affective so maybe it didn't happen...maybe she thinks thats what will happen.
Jack and her talk a little bit before that. I couldn't right it because he says a cuss word. Well...thats all for now.
BYE!
The book i'm reading is The Mystery of the Cupboard by Lynne Ried Banks. The main charater of my story is a boy named Omri.I think he likes to read because he's reading a journal he found in thatch & he likes the journal so much that he has trouble breathing when the writing gets to the climaxe.Hears a part of the story so you'll get what I mean."Pressuredas he was by the life around him, he was sorely temted to just flick throgh the thin pages of the notebook, picking out the bits that concernd him the most."Gotta go bye!!!
Oh yeah! I forgot to tell 'yall...The book is Checkers, by John Marsden. BYE!!!!!
My book is the Vile village.the names are Violet,Klaus, and Sunny.this is what the auther said in the book."Violet, who at fourteenwas the eldest bouldilare child, was an exelent inventor, and spent a great deal of time with her hair tied up in a ribbonto keep out of her eyesas she thought of new mecanical divises".If you ask me she's a great inventor and she gets the bouldalares out of a lot of stuff.thats all for right now.
Ok.Right now in my book mouse has betrayed her family and friends .Mouse said she would be sigurds sister and friends is the part in the book that saddend me havedonefor mouse she betrays them .What a brat.A liar.Dont you think?here is a partn the book that explains"They had been led into the gully.By mouse who had known just where she was taking them. And they had walked right into the trap."Sigurd stared out of his cage at the world around, his heart broken and mind bent in equal measure".That explains how Sigurd feels when someone he loved so much has been telling him a millon lies since they met.Pease write back if you think thats sad or not.I think mouses character is so rude.I am so sorry for incomplete words the computer is eraseing whli i whrite and i dont have enouh time to finish .bye(sorry)-_-

I am reading 'Esperanza Rising' things author wrote that told me setting and characteristics me were: "The night before the dressmaker was scheduled to come, Mama woke Esperanza in the middle of the night and they left only with what they could carry. Esperanza dressed in a dark shall to blend in with the night." Also, "She hurried after Mama knowing she might never come back to her home again, her heart filled wiht venom for Tio Luis."
The setting is the middle of the night and she was hesitant about leaving.

These couple of sentences i really thought discribed one of the teachers in my book,"Mr.Fizpatrick had a glob of a nose, a heavy chin, and sprouts of hais that poked from his bald head like the eyes of a rotting potato. His polo shirt clumped over his pillowy belly.Mr.Patato,we called him, because he looked like a scoop full of mush." i really like that statement because you can really picture Mr.Fizpatrick instead of just saying mr.fizpatrick alittle heavy and stuff like that.
R.L.Stine said,"Over the years the ghost had become a monster. It had long white fingernails that curled into spirals. He had black, cracked teeth that poked out from his swollen dry lips."I think that its trying to tell me a greater detail of the ghost.No.bye!
They discribed a girl name bird (thats not really her name) like
"My legs all skiny and burised up."
They discribed a boy name Harlem like this "He was so easy to spot'ccuse he towered over everybody. His long hair hanging down his back of his neak and covered up his ears.
I think i can picture what he looks like.I also have a god guess of what bird looks like.
My character is named Alex.He is the main character in this story. The story is called "SKINNY - BONES".He is a funny character. In the story he makes alot of kids laugh. But the perants don't think it is really think it is funny.Alex plays baseball. And every time he plays hes team loses. So far the book is getting very good by the minute.I like my book that I am reading. It is fun to read books like my book they are so cool.Wellthats all folks!!
The authour said "Disscribing Miss Wimpple was hard.Just thinking about her maid matt feel sick. She was tall and thin, and she wore a nlack dress. Her skin was papper-white,and her eyes-he couldn't find the right words for her eyes."
The story Im reading now is lifes a funny proposition, horatio. Some of the characteristic are that he's a kid in the pits also weird ,and made fun of at school. Its about a boy who istwelve and has a shakespears name. His life starts to change when his grandpa's dog mollie goes out into the snow and falls through the ice at the incedent the dog dies then his friend who shares the same passion for chess. His friends sister who shares the passion for animals and his life changes.
What made me want to read what you wrote was that when I read the begining it sounded interesting
my book is getting pretty intereszting
I am still reading the Voyage of the Frog by Gary Paulsen. One of the descriptions from the book is
"It was a greatful, clean, neat, silent maneuver." That sentence tells me that it was a very fairy tell story book. It tell me that it wasn't too fast, nor too slow,
and that it was very smooth like the boat just oozed across the water.
another description would be this
"It was evening now, the sun low over the water. In the entire day
there had not been one breath of wind, and the sails just hung where he had jammed them before the storm. This descripition tells me that it is almost dark and that he can't get very far in the boat because there is not alot of wind. It tells me that it
is probably really crisp air and that he will not probably be able to sail for quite a while.
Another description is this "The inside of the boat was still a frightful mess, with garbage and dampness all around." This sentence tells me that this boat is not the my place to be of choice.
This book is full of descriptions and they all tell you what things look like and you can picture the settings, charectors, and things in your head. Again, I suggest this book for all of you people.
In this book that mr. M has called Timeline, what makes what to read on is I want to know if the man is going to be ok. I also want to know where they are that is so dusty. I will look into that book soon. It sounds cool.
My author wrote "He was tall and lean, wearing a long, beige trench coat. His shoulders were a wide crescent. His face, even under the shade of his circular brimmed hat,was pale. I think that is discriptive.
a boy named edmond is very spitefull like when he said "When I am king you all shall be stone."Showing that he is sort of evil.
h e y people
where i am it starts..."Hurry up
miss thompson"!Jimmy was waving an envolop eager to open it.what is
it, Jimmy. i'm getting my giud
dog today!
The author(Cornelia Funke) did a phisical descriptive on a girl named hornrt:"She was slender and hsd brown hasir, which she wore in a long, thin braid that went right down to her hips and looked like a long stinger. It had given her a nickname:Hornet. She never answered to any thing else." Anouther one is"He ran his slender fingers through his long raven black hair which he usally wore in a pony tail." In my book the girl is part of a orphan runaway group and the boy (scipio, theif lord)is the leader. The book is the thief lord.It rock!!!:)Anouther is"he liked to act grownup"He thinks he's mature (which he's not because he's a big liar!)Theres also a part that a guy says"What happend to his angel hair".Gotta go!!<:)(party smiley)
in my story it sais that a girl has red hair and is a person who likes to cheat and somebody that hates bowling they say she hates alot of stuff she is a white girl and likes a boy named joe
a wrinkle in time,by madeleine lengle,a girl, meg is very adventersit she trys to find her dad on a planet ,dering this trip she get frozen in a stone and has to use her mind to get out.
this part tells how she is trying to get out and talk to her father,' she was lying in an open feild of what looked likerusty, stubby grass.she blinked, slowly, and with difficulty.meg, her father said.meg, are you all right? her tongue felt like a stone tongue in her mouth, but she managed to croak,'i can't move.'
They had four arms and far more
than five fingers to each hand,
and fingers were not fingers, but
long waving tentacles. They had
heads, and they had faces. But
where the faces of the creatures
on Uriel had seemed far more than
human faces, these seemed far less. Where the features would
normally be there were several
indentations, and in place of ears
and hair were more tentacles. They
were tall, Meg realized as they came closer, far taller than any
man. They had no eyes. Just soft
indentations. I think that the
description of the characters are
telling me that the way they are coming towards Meg is that she is
describing how they looked from
were she is looking.
